MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY BECOMING AN HSI

At a time where minority populations are growing in the US, the importance of having diversity in schools also increases. Back in 2015, Dr. Dan Myers, the new provost for Marquette University declared that one of his plans was to increase the Hispanic population to 25 percent in the next ten years and become a Hispanic Serving Institution. If it is accomplished, Marquette would be the third Jesuit Hispanic Serving Institution, along with Loyola Marymount University and Saint Peters University.

In efforts to raise the student population, Jacqueline Black was hired as the new associate director for Hispanic Initiatives. She is also the faculty adviser for the Ignacio Ellacuria S.J. Dreamers Scholarship committee. Black previously worked as a Spanish teacher and as the Latino Family Liaison at Marquette University High School. Her efforts to increase Hispanic population were successful and enrollment rose from nine to 18 percent.

Becoming an HSI goes beyond breaking barriers and creating spaces for students of color in a predominately White Institution. It is encouraging Hispanic students to continue onto higher education and become professions in their prospective fields by providing a unique education that is found in Jesuit colleges/universities.
